Water Use Efficiency & Why It’s Important
KPUD manages your drinking water with one goal in mind: reliable service today and a dependable supply for the future. One of the ways we do that is through our Water Use Efficiency (WUE) program.
Water Use Efficiency is simply a planning approach that helps us understand how water is used across our systems and makes sure our wells, pipes, and storage can keep up with demand (especially during peak summer months). Practicing Water Use Efficiency does not mean we are running out of water. It means we are managing our systems responsibly, so water is available when and where it’s needed most.
The WUE program is required by the Washington State Department of Health, but more importantly, it helps KPUD make smart, local decisions that benefit you.
Through WUE, KPUD is able to:
- Compare groundwater production to customer use
- Implement conservation where needed
- Assist customers with cost saving water use measures
- Find and fix leaks
This work helps preserve groundwater resources, delay or avoid expensive infrastructure projects, and keep long-term costs more stable for customers.
What does this mean for you?
Most customers won’t notice any changes. In some areas, particularly during the summer, you may see conservation measures or goals aimed at reducing outdoor water use. These efforts help ensure reliable service for existing customers even during the warmest months.
Water Use Efficiency isn’t about limiting everyday needs. It’s about keeping KPUD’s water systems resilient, reliable, and ready now and in the future.
